MASTER OF ARTS (THEOLOGY) (M.A.)

a. PURPOSE OF THE DEGREE

The primary purpose of this program is to equip persons for competent leadership in church and society and to become witnesses of the Gospel among neighbors by providing both a foundation in basic theological education and flexibility for the learners to focus their study on particular areas. This program aims for lay leadership development for persons who work in para-church agencies or in other vocations. This program also provides solid preparation for persons who want to proclaim the Gospel abroad. It is not primarily for the ordained ministry. However, a further purpose of this program is to provide Church workers, whether ordained or not, who already have a first theological degree, with the opportunity to take a one-year sabbatical study program that can be suited to their individual requirements.

b. PRIMARY GOALS OF THE PROGRAM

Primary goals for this degree program include:
  (1)
growth in personal and spiritual maturity and in the ability to be a witness for Christ in this world;
  (2)
the capacity for critical and constructive theological reflection on the relation between faith and social, economic and cultural issues;
  (3)
skills in helping to carry out Christian ministry in congregations, work environments, and society.

c. REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

Admission to this degree program requires a baccalaureate degree or higher from an institution recognized by LTS. Learners should have the interests, aptitudes, personal qualities and academic record indicating the ability to engage in graduate level study for academic pursuits and personal development.

d. CONTENT
  1.
This program exposes learners to a broad range of theological disciplines and by the choice of the learner to the in-depth study of a specific theological discipline.
  2.
The learners in this program study the same courses as the M.Div. students but without the requirement of biblical languages and supervised Ministry Experience.
  3.
In addition to course work, learners are required to participate in a small group integrative seminar offered in the last semester of their study.

DURATION

Normally this degree requires two academic years of full-time study or the equivalent. In some cases, however, persons admitted with some advanced theological study (e.g. M.Div., M.C.S. in TEE or equivalent) or with prior extensive undergraduate studies in religion (e.g. B.Th. or B.C.E.) and with a grade average of “B” or above may complete the program with the equivalent of one year of full-time course work, or 33 credits. The time allowed for completion of the program on a part-time basis may not exceed three times that of the full-time program.

h. REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION

In order to earn the M.A. degree, a learner must have completed the required courses for the M.A. with a grade-point average of 2.00 or above.

i. LOCATION

Courses are provided on the main campus and in our Theological Education by Extension site so as to provide access to appropriate resources of faculty, library, and a community of peers pursuing similar programs of study. However, not more than 1/3 of the credits can be obtained from the TEE program.

j. FURTHER STUDY

The M.A. degree, when conferred after a bachelor’s degree, is not by itself an appropriate foundation for Doctoral studies (Th.D. and D.Min.) at LTS, but it may be a sufficient basis for further study at other seminaries or universities. If, however, a M.A. degree is obtained after a M.Div. degree, it can be a basis for further doctoral studies at LTS, such as for a D.Min. or a Th.D. A person with an M.A. degree in theology and another academic Master degree can apply for S.T.M. or M.Th. One can apply for Th.D. degree program after graduating from S.T.M. or M.Th. programs.
